The Government of Ethiopia (GoE) has embraced Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest
Degradation, as well as conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest
carbon stocks (REDD+) as part of its strategy to achieve a Climate Resilient Green Economy (CRGE)

programs in Ethiopia
The Government of Ethiopia has made significant commitments for forest (and) landscape restoration (FLR) and to reduce land- based greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. National strategies emphasize the importance of the private sector to achieve climate, land
restoration, and economic development targets.

Ongoing dialogue between the World Bank Group and stakeholders―government, civil
society, media, academia, and the private sector―is a critical aspect of the World Bank
Group’s work.
STRATEGIC ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL
ASSESSMENT (SESA)
This Strategic Environmental and Social Assessment (SESA) was updated for the Oromia Forested
Landscape Program -Emission Reductions Project (OFLP-ERP) by building on the existing “SESA For
The Implementation of REDD+ In Ethiopia Including Oromia Forested Landscape Program Social
Assessment” that has been prepared under old safeguards policies for the National REDD+ Strategy
commissioned by the former Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF), but now the forest sector is
managed under Federal Ethiopia Forest Development (EFD).
Ethiopia has signed and ratified the Paris agreement in 2017 and committed itself to adopting a low-carbon
development pathway by designing climate-conscious and resilient national development strategies.
Environmental and Social Management Framework
(ESMF)
REDD+1
is part of a national strategy, referred to as Climate Resilient Green Economy (CRGE)
strategy that aims at the main sectors of the economy to develop an environmentally sustainable
and climate resilient economy, which aims to bring the country at middle income status with
net zero emission by 2025. In line with this, Ethiopia Forest Development (EFD) is coordinating
the forest management in the country.
Strategic Action Plan to Engage Private Sector in
Oromia Forest Landscape Program
In Ethiopia, in general, and in Oromia Regional State, in particularly, deforestation and
forest degradation remain a main challenge to sustainable development. Deforestation
and degradation of forests is driven by a variety of direct and indirect factors.
GUIDELINE FOR
PARTICIPATORY FOREST MANAGEMENT IN ETHIOPIA
Promoting participatory forest management (PFM) should be considered as a
process, a cycle of working in partnership for planning, implementation,
monitoring and learning to continuously improve the practice of forest
management and provision of services to improve the wellbeing of rural people.
LAND USE LAND COVER CHANGE DETECTION FOR THE PERIOD
2007 - 2017
In Ethiopia’s Natural resources have been deteriorating over time, which amplifies exposure to substantial
environmental and climate risks that affect food and water security, energy, and human health, among other
things. Land degradation in Ethiopia has proceeded at an alarming rate and is increasingly aggravated by
climate change for the last decades.
LIVESTOCK GHG INVENTORY DATA
ANALYSIS REPORT IN OROMIA REGION
The agriculture and livestock sectors are major contributors of global greenhouse gases (GHG),
not only in terms of their carbon footprints but also as a result to the threat they pose with regards
to deforestation and land degradation due to overgrazing and landholding capacity (Gołasa et al.,
2021).
Strategic Environmental and Social Assessment (SESA)
For the Implementation of REDD+ in Ethiopia
In February 2014, the REDD + Secretariat in the Ministry of Environment and Forestry
commissioned this Strategic Environmental and Social Assessment (SESA) of the REDD+
Strategy.
OROMIA FORESTED LANDSCAPE PROGRAM (OFLP)
RESETTLEMENT POLICY FRAMEWORK (RPF)
Ethiopia is striving to build a green economy by aligning its development initiatives towards a Climate
Resilient and Green Economy (CRGE) pathway. The strategy aims to ensure the social and economic
developments are socially, environmentally and economically acceptable and sustainable.
